…Tech and Human Rights in China: Ha!

July 31st, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Technology

Does the high-tech community really support human rights in China? Look at what some of the big boys have been doing:

1. Cisco for selling the Chinese government network management equipment, allows them to block access to “undesirable” web sites.

2. Yahoo for providing user identities to Chinese officials of “undesirable” dissidents, leading to the incarceration of a journalist, Shi Tao, until 2014.

3. Google and Yahoo for censoring search results as the request of the Chinese government to avoid access to “undesirable” and “objectionable” content, such as “democracy” and “free speech.”

4. Skype for censoring “undesirable” words in text chats within its Chinese software package without informing the user, at the request of the Chinese government.

As the name implies, this blog is focused on mini-lists. It’s about poking fun at the world without taking things too seriously. So to kick off this blog, here’s five reasons why this blog has been created:

    1. For some strange - and wonderful - reasons, people love lists, which explains why David Letterman’s Top 10 has survived for years…and years.

    2. Online readers particularly like lists. Look at how much traffic some blogs attract when they do something such as “10 Reasons Why Paris Hilton is Not News…Ever”.

    3. As far as we can tell, nothing like this blog exists within the blogosphere, which is reason enough to do it.

    4. We can write about anything and everything, and what could better than that.

    5. Clearly, we have too much time on our hands.
