…Thanksgiving Is The Best Holiday

October 9th, 2007 Posted in Food

thanksgivingIn celebration of Canadian Thanksgiving this past weekend and the approach of the same in the U.S., it’s time to recognize the best holiday of all time.
1. Thanksgiving is a non-religious, all inclusive holiday. The first Thanksgiving was held in 1578 in Newfoundland by Martin Frobisher as a celebration for surviving the long journey from England to Canada. (He was actually trying to find the Orient.) The prevailing culture around the holiday in both Canada and the U.S. is based on celebrating the harvest. (Had it been about religion, the Pilgrims would never have invited Native Americans to the table.)
2. It’s a holiday based around building community and creating bridges across cultures. While Frobisher was credited with holding the first festival, it was a long standing  tradition in many First Nations cultures to offer thanks during the autumnal harvest. In modern times, it’s about celebrating the gathering of  family and friends gathering.
3. No gifts. No pressure.
4. Great food. While turkey is the focal point of most Thanksgiving dinners, the addition of stuffing, gravy, potatoes and fall root vegetables truly make it a feast. And the only way to finish off this meal? Pumpkin pie, arguably one of the best pies around.
5. Long weekend, short work week. We all deserve a break every once in while and no better way than to take have a third day of rest and relaxation.
