….Alex Rodriguez is Worth $30 Million/Year

November 1st, 2007 Posted in Sports

Alex Rodriguez
1. He’s the best player in baseball - a .314 batting average, 56 home runs and 156 RBIs are very impressive numbers. And while Barry Bonds got all the attention for breaking Hank Aaron’s home run record, Rodriguez will eventually become the home run king if his body doesn’t break down like Ken Griffey Jr.’s did.

2. He’s a star attraction. Love him and or hate him, A-Rod elicits strong emotions from fans wherever he goes. For a baseball owner concerned about getting fans into the ballpark and generating more television revenue, Rodriguez is a huge asset.

3. Sure he’s arrogant and an idiot from time to time but he’s good-looking, well-spoken and successful - three attributes that appeal to the masses. And he makes lots of news, highlighted this season by him being seen with a women in Toronto who was not his wife.

4. If investment bankers, hedge fund managers and Hollywood actors can make obscene amounts of money, why not a baseball player working in a $6-billion business? What’s $30 million a year compared with the $200 million that Robert Nardelli received when he was forced out as Home Depot’s chairman and CEO?

If you’re interested in the man/agent behind Rodriguez, check out New Yorker’s recent feature story on Steve Boras. It will give you an idea about Rodriguez’s strange move to announce that he was opting out of his final three years with the New York Yankees before game four of the World Series.

More: It turns out one team is already very hot to trot for A-Rod’s services: the Toledo Mud Hens. Jamie Farr would be proud!
