….We May be Eating Healthier

1. It’s impossible these days to escape the “buy organic” mantra based on this crazy notion that food shouldn’t contain hormones, pesticides or chemicals. Of course, it takes some serious cabbage (the organic variety!) to really go organic so the rest of us will have to continue to poison our bodies until retail prices decline to more affordable levels. Check out this post on Wisebread on the cost of eating healthy, while Seth Godin talks about the joys of eating organic and local.

2. McDonald’s has seen its fortunes - and sales - rebound on the strength of an overhauled menu that includes salads, burritos, white-meat chicken strips and grilled-chicken sandwiches. You can still buy one of those artery-clogging, addictive Big Macs but it’s good to know there are, in theory, healthier alternatives on the menu.

3. Krispy Kreme sales are tanking and the donut-chain is closing stores. For awhile, ultra-sugar-glazed donuts were all the rage, and people actually lined up so they could buy Krispy Kreme donuts. Well, times have changed. In the quarter ended Oct. 28, KK lost $798,000 while sales dipped 12% to $103.4-million. Mind you, it’s clear that many people are sticking stuffing their faces with fried donuts, which have to be one of the most unhealthy foods around. Canadians, by the way, lead the world in consumption per capita. Go, Canada!

4. Baked is in; fried is out. More foods such as chicken wings and potato chips are being baked. If you’ve ever had baked chicken wings, you’ll never go back.

More: In the U.K., schools are starting to serve healthier food, a campaign led by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver’s School Dinners program. Despite the move toward healthier food, additives such as MSG are still widely used. A Wall St. Journal story suggests 95,000 metric tons of MSG is sold in North America each year, and it’s contained in everything from McDonald’s sausage and chicken meals to Kraft macaroni and cheese.
