…Google Will Never Be “Apple” Cool

January 29th, 2008 Posted in Technology

Apple fanboi1. It used to be that when rumours of a new Google product emerged, people got worried. And excited. These days, it seems that the company is just throwing crap at the wall hoping some of it will stick. Apple, on the other hand, has designed a highly targeted product development cycle. Apple doesn’t always hit home runs, but everyone jumps when they say “boo!” (The real challenge will be to maintain this momentum.)

2. At the end of the day, who is really a fan of Google. Yes, it’s the best search engine out there and an amazing story of entrepreneurial success, but we use it because it’s the best search engine out there. Does anyone come to its defense in times of trouble? Apple, however, has a cadre of die-hard fanatics behind it. Don’t think about saying anything bad about Apple or risk running the gauntlet of abuse. Blogger beware!

3. Google - search focused. Apple - customer focused.

4. Despite starting out with their “Do No Evil” motto, Google has become mainstream, corporate and politicized. Apple has managed to maintain its cool image, throwing off an edgy, hip appeal, while still making a ton of money. I guess it helps that they make slick, sexy products that everyone wants.

5. Google has Eric Schmidt - buttoned up and blue suited. Throw in Sergey and Larry, and you’ve got the makings of an entirely boring head office. Apple’s got Steve. Deservedly arrogant, ego-maniacal and the brains behind the hottest industrial design shop around.

Love the blog, keep it up.

For #3, I’d say “Google - advertising focused”. They’re more an ad company than a search company!
